What is there to do in Lake Placid?
Known for its picturesque outdoor recreation, Lake Placid offers endless opportunities for hiking, biking fishing, boating, and paddling, as well as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing and riding. After a day of activities, stroll through the walkable downtown, where you’ll find a quaint Adirondack Main Street lined with shops, restaurants, bars and Olympic attractions. What’s the weather like in Lake Placid?
Located in the Adirondack Park, Lake Placid’s weather varies by season. From June to mid-September, the daytime temperatures usually hover in the high 60s to mid-70s, while late September and October bring vibrant fall foliage, comfortable days and cool nights. Starting in December and continuing through mid-March, temperatures typically dip into the teens and 20s with occasional below-zero days and an average snowfall of 100 or so inches. In the spring, visitors can expect temperatures anywhere from the mid-30s to the mid-50s.
What is the best time of year to visit Lake Placid?
It really depends on what you’re looking for. With its abundance of outdoor recreation and milder temperatures, May through July is considered peak season in Lake Placid, but it’s also the busiest. After Labor Day, you’ll find fewer crowds and spectacular fall foliage followed by snow-covered mountains, winter sports, and a spring in full bloom. Some people come for the events, like the Lake Place Ironman Triathlon and the Adirondack Canoe Classic, while others prefer the magic of Christmas in Lake Placid.
Can you rent a boat on Lake Placid?
While motor boats are permitted on Lake Placid, and boat rentals are available from spots like Captain Marney’s and Placid Boat Rentals, it’s important to note that the lake that’s visible from downtown Lake Placid is actually Mirror Lake, which is motor-free. Lake Placid is located at the north end of the village and is 2,170 acres compared to Mirror Lake’s 124 acres.
What kind of lake activities can we do?
Lake Placid is only accessible by boat launch on Mirror Lake Drive and offers boating, water skiing, tubing and more, while Mirror Lake in downtown Lake Placid is good for swimming, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and fishing. Mirror Lake has a public beach with a designated swimming area, a floating dock and lifeguards on duty, and when it freezes in the winter, it becomes a winter playground for ice hockey and ice skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and dog sled rides.
Are there things to do in Lake Placid in the fall and winter?
If you love winter, Lake Placid is the place to be. With its frozen lakes and snow-capped mountains, Lake Placid is a majestic winter wonderland with no shortage of winter things to see and do, including traditional outdoor recreation, unique winter excursions, Olympic attractions, and an annual winter carnival.
